Members Needed for Natural Medicine Advisory Board

Colorado voters recently passed Proposition 122 - The Natural Medicine Health Act. This Act will legalize access to certain plants or fungi for people 21 years of age and older within a venue created for supervised participation by state-licensed facilitators by September 2024. The Act also decriminalizes personal use of certain plans and fungi for individuals over the age of 21.

As part of this act, the Governor’s Office of Boards and Commissions is required to appoint an initial Natural Medicine Advisory Board no later than January 31, 2023. Applications for this board are open through December 31, 2022.

This Board will consist of:

  • At least 7 members with significant expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Natural medicine therapy, medicine and research

    • Mycology and natural medicine cultivation

    • Permitted organization criteria

    • Emergency medical services and services provided by first responders

    • Mental and behavioral health providers 

    • Health care insurance and health care policy

    • Public health, drug policy and harm reduction

  • At least 8 members with significant experience and experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Traditional indigenous use of natural medicines; at least one member must have this expertise

    • Religious use of natural medicines

    • Issues confronting veterans

    • Levels and disparities in access to health care services among different communities 

    • Past criminal justice reform in Colorado

Not later than September 30, 2023, and annually thereafter, the board shall make recommendations to the department related to, but not limited to, all of the following areas:

  • Accurate public health approaches and the content and scope of educational campaigns
  • Research related to the efficacy and regulation of natural medicine

  • Proper content of training programs, educational and experiential requirements and qualifications for facilitators

  • Affordable, equitable, ethical and culturally responsible access to natural medicine 

  • Appropriate regulatory considerations for each natural medicine.

  • The addition of natural medicines to the program

  • All rules to be promulgated

  • Requirements for accurate and complete date collection, reporting and publication of information related to implementation.
